Romance Literary Studies and Comparative Literature with specific focus on Africa at the University of Bayreuth mainly addresses literature and cultures outside Europe. Emphasis is laid on literatures and cinematographic cultures of Africa and Afro-diasporic spaces. Of particular interest are comparative questions related to broad thematic clusters ranging from visions of the future, slavery, relationality, migration).
Our research projects focus on West Africa, the Indian Ocean, the Carribeans and South America. Intermedial phenomena (film-image-text-music) occupy the pride of place in our research endeavours.
The comparative thrusts of our research equally engage with productions with from lusophone and hispanophone countries (notably Mozambique, Brazil and Colombia)
